Learn the art of making Nishijima washi handmade paper in Yamanashi Prefecture, a quick train ride away from Tokyo

Minobu Town, Yamanashi Prefecture

An easy day trip from Tokyo, the town of Minobu in Yamanashi Prefecture is a timeless mountain retreat known for its historic temple, abundant nature, excellent hiking trails, and a local variety of handmade paper, Nishijima washi.

This part of Minobu’s culture is thought to date back to 1571, when a samurai who had learned how to make washi paper brought this knowledge back to his hometown of Nishijima. It is said that when Takeda Shingen, the local lord, was first presented with Nishijima washi, he was delighted, and under his patronage, washi papermaking flourished in the area from that point on.

Nishijima washi is made primarily from the mitsumata plant, which results in a glossy, lustrous paper notable for how it brings out ink color, the way the ink bleeds, and its brush feel. These characteristics make it a favorite choice for traditional Japanese-style calligraphers nationwide.

In Minobu, you can experience making Nishijima washi using traditional methods passed down to the present day at the Roadside Station Nishijima Washi no Sato Kamisuki Park.
Create your own washi paper under the guidance of experienced staff. Add color and layers to create one-of-a-kind original washi goods, such as lampshades and tapestries.
