Experience the timeless beauty of Hachiman Nadagu, where sunrise, sea, and sacred tradition create an unforgettable spiritual landscape
Toyonokuni Millennium Heritage Tourism Zone
Hachiman Nadagu is a historic Shinto shrine located on the coast of Kitsuki City, Oita Prefecture. Founded in 729 as a branch of Usa Jingu, it preserves the spirit of the Rokugo Manzan culture, where Shinto and Buddhism were harmoniously blended into a unique religious tradition across the Kunisaki Peninsula. The shrine retains the refined Hachiman-zukuri architectural style, and its vermilion buildings harmonize beautifully with the sea and surrounding pine forests.
Facing the Iyo-nada Sea, Hachiman Nadagu offers a magnificent view of the sunrise over the distant mountains of Shikoku. This breathtaking scenery has long been admired as one of Nadagu’s most iconic landscapes and continues to captivate visitors from near and far. The white sands and pine-lined shore of Nada Beach, together with the offshore torii gate standing on Ichikishima, create a tranquil and picturesque coastal scene.
Thanks to the continued care of the local community, the beauty and traditions of Hachiman Nadagu remain preserved today, welcoming all who come to visit.
How to get there
From Hakata Station, take the JR Sonic Limited Express to Kitsuki Station (about 1 hour and 50 minutes). From there, drive to Hachiman Nadagu (about 30 minutes).
